“X-Men Arcade” brings the excitement of the Marvel universe and the smash-hit arcade game to iOS and Android powered devices. The arcade game we all fought over when it came out. Choose from a variety of characters and slash your way through this beat’m up side scroller. I’ve dumped countless quarters into this game growing up, so paying a few more for an iOS port was a no brainer. If you’re a fan of classic arcade hits you won’t be disapointed.
STREETS OF RAGE 2
The city was once a happy, peaceful place…until one day, a powerful secret criminal organization took over. This vicious syndicate soon had control of the government and even the police force. Released in 1992 by Sega, this brawler ranks as one of my all time favorites. Play as Max, Axel, Blaze or Skate and battle through the streets to defeat Mr. X and his organization. For only 99 cents this is a perfect pickup to satisfy your old school Genesis needs.
MEGA MAN X
Originally released for the Super Nintendo in 1993, this is yet another classic platformer that’s been rebooted with HD graphics. This game plays really well and is a smooth side scroller. Mega Man X has met with positive reviews for its gameplay, sound, and graphics, as well as its attempt to augment the aging Mega Man franchise. If you grew up playing Capcom classics I think you will enjoy this one.
DOUBLE DRAGON TRILOGY
A classic beat’em up that was originally released in the arcade in 1987 by Taito and listed at #41 in Electronic Gaming Monthly magazines “200 Greatest Games of their time”. This Arcade port provides two player coop mode and external controller support. Controls are good and the graphics are on par with the original. This is an excellent pickup for only a few bucks and one of the few classic arcade coop games in the iOS library.
CONTRA EVOLUTION HD
Who doesn’t love Contra? If you’re like me, you know the secret code by heart. This is a remake of the original Contra with enhanced graphics and gameplay functionality. It’s actually a pretty good reboot and if you’re a die hard Contra fan like me you will want to have it in your library. Unfortunately no external controller support and no coop mode takes away from the full potential and fun factor Nonetheless it’s a great pickup.
This side scroller shooter is a real challenge for any gamer. The player controls a space fighter named R-9a “Arrowhead” to defend humanity against a mysterious powerful alien life-form known as the “Bydo”. The original R-Type was well received by most gaming critics. However, it was also infamous for its relentless difficulty. It earned 7th place in IGN’s Top 10 most difficult games to beat. Pick it up if you were a fan of the original.
Originally released in 1991, this cult classic, also known as Out of this World, helped bring about a new generation of 16 Bit gaming unlike anything before it’s time. The immersive atmosphere, combined with the futuristic feel and contemporary art style gave the game a feeling unlike other games at the time.. The reboot has been slightly modernized with updated graphics but hasn’t lost any of its original feel.
METAL SLUG X
Were you lucky enough to have a SNK machine at your local Arcade? Metal Slug X is an upgraded version of Metal Slug 2 and is truely the masterpiece of 2D action-shooting. Originally released in 1999 for the Neo Geo, this side scroller shooter was one arcade game you didn’t feel bad dumping a million quarters into to beat. The iOS version plays very well and feels authentic to the original SNK release. If you love Metal Slug like me pick it up.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG
The first Sonic game, titled Sonic the Hedgehog, was a platform game released in 1991 by Sega. Doesn’t get much better than the original Sonic. If you owned a Genesis you definitely had this game. Within a few minutes you’ll be ripping through levels like it was 1991. This is a must have for anyone who grew up with Sega and loved Sonic. The controls aren’t perfect but it’s sitll worth the small price tag.
MARVEL VS CAPCOM 2
Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes is a 2000 fighting game developed and published by Capcom. It is the fourth game in the Marvel vs. Capcom series and is considered one of the best fighting games of all time. Combine Ryu and the Hulk and you have a blockbuster arcade smash. The controls are revamped for the iPad touch screen and you are able to pull off your special combos with ease.
